Growing Food in Lake Tahoe – Asparagus. This hardy perennial vegetable can become part of an edible landscape, and a mainstay in your garden. It is also one of the earliest vegetables that can be harvested from your garden. Native to Europe, and the Mediterranean area this plant has been grown as a food for 5000 years. In America, Thomas Jefferson was quite fond of asparagus, growing it at Monticello. Asparagus is high in a number of vitamins and minerals, eaten raw, grilled steamed or baked.
